Blue Mountain School is a nonprofit parent, teacher, & studentt cooperative, dedicated to providing the best education we can offer our children, from preschool through middle school and an independent study high school program.
Our Mission
Blue Mountain School's mission is to foster a love of learning and respect for family, community, and nature as great teachers and partners in that process. We encourage the exchange of energy between our small entity, the local community, and the world community. Further, we are deeply committed to the development of honest, respectful relationships between parents, teachers, staff and children.
Our Curriculum
Learning at Blue Mountain School is centered around each particular student and their individual needs. Students participate in fun, relevant, real-life learning experiences geared for life-long use. Often these lessons are suggested by the students themselves. For instance, students may explore the long-term effect of their decisions and lifestyles on their community and environment.
While BMS does not use traditional teaching methods, all students participate at their own ability levels in both traditional and non-traditional school subjects. A variety of observational methods are used to gauge student progress and parents have the opportunity to communicate with teachers regarding their child's progress. BMS's ability to provide individual attention to every student due to small class sizes allows for a four day school week and more time for extra-curricular activities and shared family time.
Another unique benefit of BMS is the opportunity for parents to be involved in all aspects of the school from volunteering in the classroom to mowing the lawn. This creates a close connection with their child's education while building the shared sense of community that is so important to BMS.
